What can I borrow through interlibrary loan / article delivery services?

Interlibrary loan requests are for books and articles that NJIT libraries do not own. We will also fill other type of requests such as dissertations, proceedings, patents, and reports. Non-print materials may be difficult to obtain as most library do not loan these items.  Interlibrary loan will not order textbooks, multiple copies of a single title for classroom use nor can we order items for placement on reserve.

How many items can I request? ? Is there a cost associated with submitting an interlibrary loan request?

There is no limit to the number of requests you can submit at one time. However interlibrary loan staff will process up to 10 items (in priority order) per patron per day during peak times of the semester.  Currently there is no charge for submitting an interlibrary loan request unless the cost of the loan or article exceeds $35. You will be notified before the request is made for charges that exceed $35.

How long will it take to receive my interlibrary loan request?

Books and other borrowed items take anywhere from 4 days to several weeks depending on who is the lender. Most articles arrive 1 to 3 days, but may take longer if we have difficulty identifying a lender or incorrect citation is provided.

How will I know when my interlibrary loan request arrived?

An email notification will be sent to your NJIT email account when the interlibrary loan have arrived and are ready for pickup.

Where do I pick up my interlibrary loan request?

Books and other material on loan to you can be picked up at the Van Houten Library Interlibrary Loan window between 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday otherwise at the Circulation Desk.  For distance learning (off-campus) students; materials will be mailed or faxed to you as selected on the request form.

How long can I keep my interlibrary loan request? Can I renew if I need to keep it longer?

The loan period for most borrowed items is 4 weeks. Actual due dates vary depending on the policies of the lending library and may also contain special conditions i.e. on-site-use only. Interlibrary item may be recalled at any time by the lending library.  You may request renewals by sending an email message to lib_ill@njit.edu or call 973-596-5798. Interlibrary loan office staff will notify you by email if the renewal was denied.

Are there overdue fines for interlibrary loan materials?

There are no charges for overdue interlibrary loan. After the item is 7 days overdue, it will be marked as lost. Patrons will be charged for the replacement cost of their item(s) as determined by the lending library, and their borrowing and interlibrary loan privileges will be blocked until the item has been returned, or the replacement cost paid.
